"“An American Sun Shines Brighter;” or, Photography Was (Not) Invented in the United States"

Abstract

This essay revisits two “constitutive antagonisms” of photography. The first one is the widespread narrative that pits the European invention of photography against the formidable development of the medium in the US. The second antagonism, revolving around the “idea of photography,” concerns the relationship between science and technology, or idea and practice.
