Geohistory of loans from the Louvre collections: approaches to the internationalisation of the Louvre through the lens of the objects circulation

This contribution aims to question the place of the Louvre as an actor in the globalized circulation of objects, based on the movement of artifacts loaned to museum institutions abroad between 1924 and 2017. For a cultural institution such as the Louvre, the geo-history of the loan of artworks is linked to the history of its increasing internationalization. The mapping of the cities and countries hosting the Louvre’s collections for exhibitions reveals a geographical extension of the Louvre’s relations within the world over the course of the twentieth century, although this geography remains selective and polarized. This article thus proposes a critical approach to the "global influence" of the Louvre, while revisiting the challenges of the museum’s internationalization.
