Gender, Violence, and the Nation-State in Contemporary Indian Poetry

Genre, Violence et État-Nation dans la Poésie Indienne Contemporaine

Résumé

This thesis examines the conjunction of notions of femininity, violence, and nationalism in the work of three contemporary Indian writers. It seeks to understand how contemporary literature responds to the present political conjuncture in India, with an emphasis on its gendered dimensions. It examines three works of poetry written and published in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. These are Angor in Hindi, by Jacinta Kerketta, Until the Lions, a fragmentary retelling of the Mahabharata in English by Karthika Naïr, and Bhijakī Vahī, a collection of Marathi poems by Arun Kolatkar. This thesis argues that all three texts deploy motifs of femininity and womanhood to challenge the violent injunctions of the nation-state. The inclusion of marginalized gendered perspectives offers emancipatory models of embodiment, motherhood, mourning, and pleasure. It also transforms poetic convention and form, opening poetry to a diversity of cultures, artistic practices, and extra-literary forms of discourse.
