Teaching politics of vaccination in medical school: A French experience

Résumé

Within the framework of the teaching Sciences & Societies of the Master 1 Biomedical Research of the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, I intervene for 3 years now on the subject of politics of vaccination. This teaching divided into 4 sequences – for a total of 12 hours – has gradually been shaped and aims at one objective: to make students understand the complexity of the vaccination act. So that this teaching is at the same time the most complete, and the most interesting possible, 4 sequences very different from each other are put in place. To sum up: sequence 1 allows students to take stock of their knowledge in the form of questions and answers; sequence 2, similar to a lecture, provides historical knowledge; sequence 3, through articles analysis, introduces the complexity underlying vaccine strategies and policies; the last session, during which a film is viewed, proposes to highlight the future issues related to vaccination. In order to make this teaching as ‘playful’ as possible, different media are used: scientific articles, films, YouTube videos, and interactive websites. In addition, the testimony of a person suffering from an adverse effect related to vaccination is also provided. This fragmentation of teaching in different sequences is particularly conducive to the deconstruction of myths about antivax movements, vaccine resistance, the role of the pharmaceutical industry or the financial aspect of vaccine production. This communication aims to share the experience of this teaching, its advantages, its disadvantages, the returns and interesting results it may have aroused, but also avenues for reflection to complete and/or improve it.
