Is urban agriculture macrofauna-friendly?

Résumé

In the cities of industrialized countries, we observed an increasing interest in urban agriculture which has grown on diverse productive or non-productive forms. Despite the role of soil macrofauna (i.e. earthworms, ants, spiders or carabids…) in soil functioning (organic matter cycling, biocontrol) and especially food production, no study has ever investigated the impacts of urban agriculture on these natural ecosystem engineers. The aim of this study is to (i) describe the communities present in various urban agriculture forms and to (ii) explore the effects of urban agriculture on soil macrofauna. We compared three types of urban agriculture forms: productive ground level and soil based, productive rooftop with container media and non-productive community gardens. In 9 sites located in Paris region (France), we sampled earthworms with chemical extraction and epigeic arthropods with interception traps. We also recorded management practices and various soil physico-chemical properties including trace metals. Earthworm communities were mainly composed of endogeic species such as Lumbricus castaneus and anecic species such as Lumbricus terrestris were also present. We observed a complex response of soil macrofauna to urban agriculture, with a combination of the type of urban agriculture but also other management practices such as mulching. The preliminary results of this pioneer study participated to fill the gap in our knowledge of the relation between sol biodiversity and urban agriculture.
