Le passé composé, temps de base dans L’Étranger d’Albert Camus

Résumé

Our paper is based on Gosselin’s SdT (Semantics of Temporality in French) to show how one can explain the mechanisms of the French “tiroirs verbaux” in L’Étranger, just by looking at their own aspectuo-temporal values. Two SdT hypotheses will be used to analyze the temporal consistency implemented in this narrative. The first one claims that “linguistic constraints on the consistency and chronology (…) are directly linked to aspectual configurations in the form of a global correlation” (Gosselin, 2005, p. 139). The second deals with the key role of the interval range. These two hypotheses will allow us to show the extent to which the PC could be linked to expressing a succession narrative and act as “a reference narrative tense” in L’Étranger.
