Adult Children’s Bedrooms and the Emptying Nest: Mechanisms of Transition

Résumé

This chapter examines the transition from the full nest to the empty nest phase of the family life course, focusing on the transformation of domestic spaces and objects, with a particular emphasis on the bedrooms of adult children. By analysing 62 qualitative, in-depth dyadic interviews in Poland and France between 2018 and 2020, the authors investigate the shifting dynamics of parental roles and identities during this critical transition period. The findings of this study shed light on the intricate interplay between agency, power, identity, and family roles as families navigate the empty nest stage. By exploring the materiality aspect, the research illustrates how physical spaces and objects contribute to the production and reconfiguration of family relations. Furthermore, it reveals that various factors, such as the prolonged duration of education, the economic crisis, neoliberal housing policies, and young people’s challenges in achieving economic independence, significantly influence the parental role and impede the transition of children’s bedrooms.
